Mengua, mengua: and the Light shineth in darkness is a solo created specially for dancer Carolina Ureta based on two songs of Funesta by the renowned Mexican composer Marcela Rodríguez.
In this choreography, the soprano is integrated into the mis en scène and plays the antagonist role. Funesta is a cycle of 6 songs inspired in poems by Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. For this creation, Mr. Vázquez has selected two of them: “Soneto 164” and “Afuera”.
Mengua, mengua reveals the fight between light and darkness. The dancer plays the light, while the soprano plays the darkness.
